Identity Theft
Prevention Guide

Important Steps to prevent others from stealing your identity: (Think of the word SCAM)
S        Be STINGY with your personal information.
C          CHECK your financial information regularly.
A          ASK for your credit report from one of the three major credit reporting agencies:

                  Equifax (888) 766-0008 www.equifax.com

                  Experian (888) 397-3742 www.experian.com

                             TransUnion (800) 680-7289 www.transunion.com
M         MAINTAIN careful records of your accounts.

 Some further helpful hints:

  • On your checks, use your first initial instead of your full first name.
  • List only the last 4 digits of your account number on checks when paying bills.
  • Use your work phone number rather than home number on checks.
  • Never put your Social Security Number on checks.
  • Photocopy both sides of all credit cards and licenses.
  • Keep a copy of your passport when traveling.
  • Obtain your credit report yearly from one of the major credit reporting agencies.
  • Use a shredder to destroy personal info or unsolicited credit card applications.
